Tree Trimming Done the Right Way

Tree trimming isn't just about aesthetics β€” improper cuts can permanently damage or kill a tree. At NoVA Tree Trimming, every pruning cut we make follows the American National Standards Institute A300 pruning guidelines, the industry's gold standard for tree care.

Our ISA-certified arborists assess each tree before any cuts are made. We identify the primary objective β€” whether that's clearing a hazard, improving structure, raising a canopy, or managing long-term growth β€” and prune with that goal in mind. Every decision is intentional.

Types of Pruning

Which Type of Trimming Does Your Tree Need?

Different trees and goals call for different pruning approaches. Our arborists will recommend the right method during your free estimate.

Most Common

Crown Cleaning

Removal of dead, dying, diseased, and crossing branches from the crown. The most common form of pruning β€” improves tree health and reduces hazard risk.

Clearance

Crown Raising

Removal of lower branches to provide clearance for buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, and sight lines. Common in urban Northern Virginia neighborhoods.

Size Management

Crown Reduction

Reduces the overall height or spread of a tree by pruning back to lateral branches. Preferred over topping β€” preserves the tree's natural form and long-term health.

Young Trees

Structural Pruning

Early-stage pruning to establish good branch architecture in young trees. Prevents structural defects before they develop into expensive hazards later.

Light & Air

Crown Thinning

Selective removal of branches throughout the crown to increase light penetration and air circulation. Reduces wind resistance and improves overall tree health.

Restoration

Restoration Pruning

Improves structure and appearance of trees that have been previously topped, damaged by storms, or improperly pruned. A multi-year process done right.

When to Trim

Best Time to Trim Trees in Northern Virginia

Timing varies by species, but here's a general guide for the Northern Virginia climate.

Best Season

Late Winter

Feb–Mar. Trees are dormant, insects inactive, wounds heal quickly in spring. Ideal for most species.

Good

Early Spring

Apr–May. Fine for light pruning. Avoid heavy cuts on oaks during peak growing season.

Limited

Summer

Jun–Aug. Avoid major pruning. Summer heat stresses trees. Emergency work only.

Good

Fall

Sep–Nov. Light trimming is fine. Avoid cuts that may not heal before winter frost.

Note: dead, diseased, or hazardous branches should be removed any time of year, regardless of season.

Tree Species

Common NoVA Tree Species We Trim

Northern Virginia has a rich diversity of native and ornamental trees. Each species has specific pruning needs β€” our arborists are trained on all of them.

White & Red Oak

NoVA's most common large shade tree. Must avoid pruning March–June (oak wilt risk). Late winter is ideal.

Tulip Poplar

Virginia's state tree. Fast-growing with brittle wood β€” regular pruning prevents storm damage and branch failure.

Eastern Red Cedar

Hardy native evergreen. Prune in late winter. Avoid cutting into old wood β€” won't regenerate growth.

Flowering Dogwood

Virginia's state flower/tree. Prune after blooming in spring. Susceptible to fungal issues β€” clean tools required.

Red & Sugar Maple

Prune in late winter when dormant. Avoid late spring pruning which triggers heavy sap flow.

American Elm & Ash

Both susceptible to serious disease (Dutch elm disease, emerald ash borer). Regular health monitoring essential.

Common Questions

Tree Trimming FAQs

The terms are often used interchangeably, but technically pruning focuses on tree health β€” removing dead, diseased, or structurally problematic branches β€” while trimming is more about shaping and aesthetics. Our work almost always includes both, and every cut follows ANSI A300 standards regardless of how you describe the job.
Most mature trees benefit from professional pruning every 3–5 years. Young or fast-growing trees (like tulip poplar or silver maple) may need attention every 2–3 years. Ornamental trees and shrubs often benefit from annual light pruning. We'll recommend a schedule during your free estimate based on your specific trees.
Topping β€” cutting a tree's main branches back to stubs β€” is one of the most harmful practices in tree care. It creates large wounds that can't close properly, triggers weak regrowth, promotes decay, and often kills the tree within years. We never top trees. If size reduction is your goal, we use crown reduction pruning which achieves the same result without harming the tree.
You don't need to be present for the work itself β€” our crews are fully supervised and professional. We do ask that someone is available at the start for a quick walkthrough with the crew lead to confirm the scope of work, and available at the end for a final walkthrough before we leave. After-hours arrangements can sometimes be made β€” just ask.
Yes β€” always, and at no extra charge. All branches, chips, and logs are removed from your property unless you request otherwise (some customers like wood chips for mulch or logs for firewood). Your property will be raked and blown clean before we leave.

Pro Tip: Watch for These Warning Signs

Dead branches, crossing limbs rubbing together, branches growing toward your house, V-shaped branch unions (weak), bark cracks or cavities, and sudden lean β€” all signal a tree that needs professional attention soon.

What to Ask Any Tree Service

Always ask: Are you ISA-certified? Do you carry liability insurance and workers' comp? Do you follow ANSI A300 standards? Will you provide a written estimate? A reputable company answers yes to all four.

NoVA's Guarantee

If you're not satisfied with the cleanup or the work when we're done, we'll come back and make it right β€” no charge. We haven't left a job with an unsatisfied customer yet, and we intend to keep it that way.
